Nursing and clinical practice adviser

Daniel is known for his ability to inspire and support people as they create and design innovative practices with a desired future in mind.

A graduate of the US Army Student Nurse Program, he has over 42 years’ experience as a registered professional nurse. He has experience as a staff nurse, clinical nursing specialist, Director of Nursing Services, Professor, Associate Dean, Consultant, Researcher and Coach. He is best known for his work in nursing education, creativity and metacognition in addition to the development and testing of the Outcome Present State Test (OPT) Model of Reflective Clinical Reasoning. The OPT model supports the development of a systems thinking mind-set related to the complexities associated with caring for patients and families with multiple competing health care needs. The major difference between the OPT clinical reasoning model and previous models is the OPT’s emphasis on filters, framing, and focusing a situation and the gaps that exist between the problems identified and the outcomes desired.

Daniel earned a PhD in Nursing from the University of Michigan, a Master’s Degree in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, TX and BS degree in Nursing from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, IL. He is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and past President (2003-2005) of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International.
